Pre Production- Creative Elements

 The Beginning

Before I started filming My Documentary, I wanted to create a general plan of what i was going to create. This is so i wasn't going into the production process headfirst otherwise the documentary would be unorganised. This is because it wouldn't follow a general flow with no beginning middle or end and i wouldn't know what i would include and therefore it wouldn't be entertaining and wouldn't tell a clear message. In order to prevent those things and help it entertain my audience of young adults aged 16-24 years old, i wanted to create a plan. What things i would include with the documentary, such as the codes and conventions, shot types, camera angles, people I'm including, what I'm talking about, how long each section will be, the overall message ect. To start off with I create some notes to brainstorm m general ideas on paper so i could start to structure a chronological plan of what order i would show things in the documentary. I will then use this to plan out a script.

To start with, I decided To create a list of the various codes and conventions that I am planning to try and use in my documentary. I talk about how i plan to include a montage at the begining to show game play. This is to gain the audiences attention into the documentary before it starts to make them want to watch it. I will include interviews to get peoples opinions on the games. I will also plan to use voice of god, archive footage, reenactments and statistics. This is also to educate the audience on the subject, gain their attention, and to make it entertaining so they enjoy it and want to keep watching rather than them getting bored and clicking away.

Before I started to write my script, I decided to structure my documentary into different chapters so it made it easier to plan. I would break down into 5 or 6 chapters that would run 2-3 minutes long each. Each chapter would talk about a certain topic focusing on a certain era within gaming going into how the technology has affected young people and how it has changed their lives. Era of videogames adds something that would make modern day videogames what it is today. Its important to break it down over the years. For each chapter i will show videogame gameplay from that generations respective console, using multiple camera angles. I would then mix it up with some interviews with peoples opinions. and i will also use voice of god so I (the director) can talk about some facts and statistics as well as my own opinions so i can educate, and inform and entertain the audience on how the technology has evolved and affected young people, which is something the client want to see in the documentary.

The script

Based off the initial plan i pulled together in my notes, i then started to work on an initial script for my documentary. Wanted to split my script in th same chapters i made my notes with as i think the plan in the notes helped me to write out the script as i can separate what i am going to say into the same chapters i made my notes off as I can work on a chapter at a time rather than making a script for a 10-15 minute documentary in one go and it then not making much sense. Seperating up my plan is a way better use of my time management and good planning in my opinion.
